They
were built between 1908 (first wing), 1939 (second wing) and the 50's
(portico and two more wings), to preserve major finds, particulary inscriptions
and stone monuments and mosaics, that are now typologically and chronologically
arranged. The funerary monuments should represent the various types
known in Aquileia: each of them reflects peculiar customs and religious
beliefs. One wing presents the arae, a kind of monument used by freedmen
and soldiers in the 1st century A.D. In further wings you can see the
stelae: among them, a group belonging to soldiers of the legions XI
Claudia and I Italica,
of the end of the 3rd - first half of the 4th century A.D.; we should
note as well the stelae of the doctor Hagius Aius and of the mime Bassilla,
with Greek inscription.
